Camping at Railroad Bridge, Arkansas Headwaters, Colorado

We never did get to camping at Railroad Bridge after we said we wanted to. We moved to Chicago shortly after that post was made and haven’t been able to go camping much. But we visited Colorado Springs to get the rest of our stuff from storage a few weeks ago and decided to go then. Our friends Shawn and Chenelle (and Bert!) came with.

First things first: Donuts from Amy’s in Colorado Springs. Since the Donut Mill is so unreliable, and Amy’s is new, we thought we’d give her a try. They were good!

On our way! Rain as per usual.

As soon as we got there we set up the tent and the rain fly! Since we sold the trailer, we’ve been tent camping again- but we bought a good Coleman tent with a huge rain fly. So far so good.

Next up, some fishing for Mike. Be careful, that water is deep and fast moving!

Eventually Shawn, Chenelle, and Bert(!) showed up.

Later Shawn decided to try to make a campfire with some high tech fire starters he was reviewing for his blog. I scoffed and made one the old fashioned way.

Still trying…

The next morning we tried to make another fire so we could boil water for coffee since we didn’t bring a stove. It was not as easy as we thought it would be but somehow it worked out. This coffee in tea bags isn’t so bad.

Found a nice spot to drink it.

Then packed up, took a couple more pictures, and went for breakfast in Buena Vista.

Also got to see my favorite Colorado phenomenon: raining while it’s sunny.

You probably don’t know my friend Andrew Long.

We worked together in Phoenix some years ago at a newspaper, and he’s since moved on from newspapers. His latest project is the Hunter’s Database.

I’m happy that we’re still friends. He comes through town sometimes, and we try to catch fish.

This time, Adrienne and my daughter came along and endured our heavy drinking and bad jokes. We stayed at Elevenmile Reservoir — Andrew slept in the Jeep because he makes a lot of scary noises in the night. Adrienne and I stayed in the trailer. (The teenager went back to COS to catch an early flight.)

At the last minute on a Friday, it was fairly sketchy to find a camping spot at Elevenmile, but we managed to find a great spot by the water. It’s an OK place, but we prefer creeks and rivers. Still, the campsites were well apart from the others, and it didn’t feel crowded even though it was a weekend night. Overall, a decent experience. A solid B.

Of course it rained when we were there. It rains every time we go camping. That's why we got a trailer to begin with. Rain. Every. Time.

Of course after the storm comes a rainbow. Whatever. Knock it off with the raining already. It's a pain in the ass.

Despite the rain and the not catching of any fish (except for that teen girl), we had delicious food. Hot dogs, some kind of corn medley. My kid needs longer shorts.

Thinking about going out and not catching any fish.

Instead of catching fish, I think I'll just sit here a little in the sun and consider all of life's mysteries.

Campfire. We had one.
