Smiley’s Bakery and Cafe, Colorado Springs, CO

The first time we went to Smiley’s at 323 N Tejon St. in downtown Colorado Springs I was unimpressed. I don’t remember what I had but whatever it was I thought I could make it better at home myself.

But the place is really cute inside and they have outdoor seating. It reminds me of what a roadside or country cafe in the south would be like. I haven’t spent much time in the south so I don’t really know this from experience but it’s what I imagine one of those kinds of places would be like.

None of the chairs match, they have retro signs and ephemera all over the walls, the menu is on a chalkboard inside and handwritten outside.

Plus everyone else on earth loves it and it’s only a couple blocks from our house so we gave it a second chance. I’m really glad we did. It’s one of my favorite places now.

I had the cornmeal pancakes with blueberries and some scrambled eggs. It also came with bacon or ham. Lately I’ve been trying to avoid eating pork so I usually give my pork products to Mike. Since he was having bacon with his, I got the ham.

Doesn’t that bacon look good!? I thought so too.

So I had a bite.

And OMG, this bacon was impossible to resist. It’s funny because even hard core vegetarians have a hard time resisting bacon. But I was always just so-so on it and never really missed eating it. But this bacon will kill you. In a good way. You have to try it.

So the next time we went I got the whole grain pancakes with blackberries, scrambled eggs and BACON. Mike had the chicken fried steak with potatoes and bacon.

They also have a large lunch menu with sandwiches, salads and things like that. Oh, and pie. Pie! But they close at 4:00 so you gotta get there early!

Armon’s, Cacao, Eagle Rock Italian Deli, Cafe Beaujolais, Colombo’s, Great White Hut, The Good Egg Phoenix, Pan Quotidion, Downtown Los Angeles, Grand Central Market

Spicy Latte from Cacao in Eagle Rock. Super delish but maybe too spicy for some.

We also had breakfast there this time while we did laundry next door. My dryer broke, OF COURSE and since my new tenant has her own washer/dryer I didn’t bother to replace mine so it was off to the laundromat a whole bunch of times.

DM had some kind of burrito which he enjoyed.

I had the breakfast quesadilla. It had eggs, cheese and mushrooms in it and was served with potatoes. It was light yet filling, perfect for breakfast.

Breakfast at my fave diner Armon’s in Eagle Rock.

DM had the cheeseburger which is usually my fave.

While I opted for their pancakes. Some people say they are “chewy”. Whatever that means. I say they are the best in LA! Even better than DuPars.

At some point we made pizzas on my pizza stone. They weren’t any better than on the $5 Walmart pan. I left it at my parent’s house. They like that kinda thing and will probably use it a lot. This one is carmelized onions, cheese, and mushrooms.

Also had to make the usual weird one! Carmelized onions, cheese, salad, and hummus. You’ve seen this one before.

And then plain cheese and tomato sauce. I don’t think we made all these on the same night but it was awhile ago now and I have a memory of about 5 minutes so I can’t tell you mcuh more.

One night we went down to Colorado Wine Company for a glass of wine, then on to Cafe Beaujolais for creme brulee and more wine. It’s a nice yet affordable neighborhood French restaurant in Eagle Rock. It’s been there a million years and is very popular.

After THAT we went to Colombo’s. You all know allll about Colombo’s. I had to have a pic of DM in front of one of the naked lady paintings.

And apparently we also had french fries which I have no recollection of.

The Great White Hut has been in Glendale for ten thousand years. I even did a photo shoot for Playboy there one time in the mid 90s.

Glamour Shots at the buger joint.

MMMM french fries. They weren’t as good as they look.

Cheeeeeseburgers. Were as good as they looked. Plus the people who run it are super nice. Highly recommended.

Walked to the Eagle Rock Italian Deli one day. I’ve never walked there before even tho it’s only like 4 blocks away. I am used to walking places now that we live downtown COS so I like to walk now.

DM had a mortadella sandwich which he’d never had before. He gave it a thumbs up while scarfing it down.

I had what I always have, a caprese sandwich, AKA a tomato and fresh mozerella sandwich.

Also some salads.

And of course some pastries.

One day we had to go to Phoenix to check on DMs condo. That was quite the ordeal. We packed the cats in the car and took off one day and came back the next. Cookie Puss was a big scaredy cat this day so he ung out under the dashboard. I put this scarf up for him so he could hide behind it, too.

PJ was his usual mellow self.

And OMG we fully almost ran out of gas! We drove with it on 0 for like 3 miles. I was totally freaked out cuz we were pretty much in the middle of nowhere. DM looked up (on his new Droid) how to do that thing were you can increase your gas mileage by following a truck. I did that and we somehow made it to a gas station.

His condo was a mess of course. The chick who lived there was another scumbag. Here’s DM trying to look cheerful as he disposes of her shit.

We did get to have a yummy breakfast at The Good Egg in Phoenix. I had huevos rancheros which is my fave.

DM had some kind of omlette thing which was pretty close to my thing. They were both really good.

Here we are on the metro in LA. We took a ride downtown one day.

It looks warm but it was really cold. It was a rare 40 degree day in LA and we were totally unprepared in our dress.

Had some pupusas at Grand Central Market. It was fun and they were tasty.

Cheese and mushroom.

Cheese and jalapeno.

This sign cracked me up. Mmmm. Economy.

Then we went across the street to The Biltmore Hotel. They film a lot of Mad Men and they used to fil a lot of West Wing there so DM wanted to see it. We had a couple of whiskeys in their bar.

Weird random Cookie Puss shot.

After The Biltmore we went back to Grand Central Market to have some Chinese food. There’s this little place there that I’ve ALWAYS wanted to go to. But this time, once we sat down I was sorta skeeved out by the whole thing. I dunno…something about it was kinda gross. Not dirty per se, just creepy. I have no idea why and people must love it cuz it’s been there since the dawn of time and is always crowded.
DM had fried rice.

I had wonton soup. It was ok. But I think I ate a chicken foot early on and that was enough to send me packing. Glad I got that place out of my system tho.

After THAT we took the metro back to Pasadena and I was still feeling skeeved by the chicken foot so we went to Cheesecake Factory for drinks and cheesecake. I forgot that everything there is totally over the top. This was some crazy drink that I thought would be normal when I ordered it.

DM drinking a whiskey in a stupid glass. He is unhappy about it.

Banana cream cheesecake. OMG. This is the best thing ever. You have to have it! it seems like sort of uninteresting when you see it on the menu but it is AWESOME. My nephew ordered it once when I was with him and the whole table went BANANAS for it! Seriously. Have it.

Another day we decided to go Xmas shopping in Pasadena. We had coffees and croissants at Pan Quotidion on Colorado in Pasadena.

Here’s DM with his new girlfriend The Droid.

I thought this was kinda cute. And coffee in a bowl. I happen to like this.

But DM was beside himself.

DM had a roast beef sandwich (I think it was a french dip) that he liked a great deal.
It’s really good and all but it’s kinda lame that the To Go prices are like half of the Sit Down And Eat prices.

For lunch DM asked his new girlfriend where we should go nearby. She suggested this place, Elements Kitchen, on Green Street and Fair Oaks.

They had a chalkboard menu for breakfast and a normal paper menu for lunch. We had lunch. I was trying to decide between two things, a fig and blue cheese sandwich and a brie and pear sandwich. I had decided on the brie and pear but they borught me the fig and blue. I didn’t even notice till I was almost done with it. Good thing I’m not picky! Anyhow, of course it was really good. And the salad it came with was, too.

Later (or maybe it was another day) we went to The Coffee Table in Eagle Rock. I had coffee and a red velvet cupcake (I am so trendy) and he had a beer. We needed to decompress and this worked great.

So remember when we were at the Italian Deli awhile back? Well I saw these extra long spaghettis there. I became obsessed. So one day we were passing by a different Italian deli (Marios in Glendale where I’ve been going since I was a wee tot) and stopped in and bought some.
It is really really really long. And a little thicker than normal spaghetti. When cooked it’s got to be at least a yard long. Fun!

One day we went to Petit Beaujolais which is the cafe version of the French restaurant we went to awhile back.

These are not pictures of me as you may think.

They are pictures of the guy behind me, who apparently is the singer of Rage Against The Machine. So there, you go.

I had a chicken panini and salad which was soooooooooooooooo good. I think it was the best meal in this post.

DM had a dijon burger which was alwo excellent.

Alas, eventually it was time for DM to go home. We stopped at In and Out for some burgers and fries on the way to the airport.

In N Out!

I have no idea what this is. Obviously it’s french fries. I don’t know where or why I have a picture of it tho.

Misc. Colorado Springs Things

I meant to write about the two weeks The Dange had off but we didn’t wind up doing all that much. It rained a lot of the time. We spent some time doing things around the house, working on planting the deck, eating, drinking, cooking, hanging out with the cats, and going for bike rides. Now that we live downtown we ride all over the place. On Sundays we ride to Starbucks and read the New York Times and drink coffee like people who live in a normal city…:) There are also TONS of trails, bike paths, alleys, and even just plain bike lanes here so it’s really fun to just hop on the bikes and go. The weather, as usual, is insane. Snow, wind, hail, rain, sunshine- practically all in the same day. Anyhow I think I’ve posted some of these pictures before, I can’t remember (they’re not all from the “stay-cation”).

Bike rides!

Cool retro dry cleaners by the house.

One day we rode our bikes to an oldey timey hanburger stand which was delish. There’s a bike path that goes all the way thru the city, passing by both our place and the stand…:)

DMs bday lunch at Steuben’s in Denver. it’s trying to be sorta retro 50s and I guess it’s doing a decent job.

Peach cobbler!

I had green beans, mashed potatoes and an iceberg wedge with blue cheese, yummy. DM had fried chicken. I’m not sure why I don’t have a picture of it!

One of my masterpiece pizzas. Tomato sauce and ricotta.

Carmelized onions, asparagus and cheese. It looks weird but it was super good. Even The Dange liked it.

DM at Smashburger. It’s a new burger place here in COS that everyone seems to love. DM eating some chili with an ice cream spoon because they were out of regular spoons, WTF?

He ordered some kind of fancy burger with BBQ sauce that they mistakenly left off, and fride onions. MMMM.

They have two almost identical burgers on their menu, both pretty basic. They gave me the wrong one but I didn’t notice till I was at least halfway thru. Still, it was pretty tasty but a little too salty. I enjoyed it more than DM did. The fries were some kind of fancy garlic rosemary fries and were just ok.

Ordered a chocolate malt and got a chocolate shake. The service wasn’t very good and it was extra lame because there were only like 2 other tables in there. Still, the shake was good!

They also have pretty cool decor.

Another pizza, carmelized onions, cheese. Then after it’s cooked, salad mix with hummus drizzled on top.

Plain cheese pizza.

Cookie Puss lounging.

The Colorado Springs Eddie (but fatter than the real Eddie) at Tony’s bar downtown Colorado Springs!

DM in Tony’s. We have a love/hate relationship with this bar. We love it cuz it’s really nearby, just a couple blocks so we can walk. They have really good bar food, they’re always open. But the service sucks and it’s always full of annoying college students. There’s Colorado Springs Eddie in the background again.

Doing the aformentioned walking to Tony’s! It’s so close we can even walk there in a blizzard.

Homemade biscuits and gravy. I don’t eat pork anymore so no sausage gravy. I made this out of chicken drippings. It was really good.

Cookie Puss and PJ. I can’t believe how huge Cookie Puss is now. You may remember the pics I posted when he was a kitten and how he was so tiny compared to PJ. He is almost 18 pounds now and PJ is only about 8. PJ has chronic renal failure (he’s 15 years old) and doesn’t have a very good prognosis. But he’s hanging on and enjoying life as a cat. We have to give him subcutaneous fluids twice a day and a bunch of other medications but all in all it only takes about 5 minutes per day to do and he’s pretty good about it.

I don’t know what this was all about. We were probably drunk.

The red floor. It took 5 coats of paint and I still have more to do. Gotta sand it down one more time, put on another coat or two of the red, then some kind of polyeurathane or something.

Us in Boulder. I had to wear the hippy clothes so I could fit in.

I made this last night. Mexican chili soup with fried tortilla strips, Mexican cheese, sour cream, cilantro, and avocado.

Also made chicken tacos with all the fixin’s. That’s a caipirinha in the background. My current fave.

Fatburger. We’re trying to find the best burgers in town so we’ve been going to a lot of different places in a lot of different categories. We’re going to post it on our food blog at www.oinkety.com when we’re done. I am ashamed to say we haven’t updated it in AGES.

Fatburger is Fatburger, we have them all over LA. I remember them being better than the one I had the other day. Still, it was good. I think I liked Smashburger’s better, tho. DM likes the Fatburger better.

Their shake wasn’t nearly as good as Smashburger’s.

Wade’s cafe in Colorado Springs. They’re known for their pancakes and they win Best Pancakes all over the place all the time. It was packed and we actually had to wait which never happens here. I was not impressed with my huevos rancheros.

DM liked his breakfast and the pancakes WERE really good. Still, not as good as the REAL best pancakes in town which are to be had at Maggie Mae’s.

DM is now into fly fishing. He took a class and got all the gear. He even caught some fish!

I guess after that lame huevos rancheros I decided to make my own. I honestly don’t remember this at all.

Here’s DM practicing casting. And getting the line stuck in the tree. Not the best place to practice, Dange! Note the junkyard chic we have going on in our back yard.

Cookie Puss!

PJ!

They are always stalking the squirrels, who are really quite bold. Yesterday I let them out and suddenly Cookie Puss lunged toward the chair where I didn’t realize, was a little squirrel! They never come down onto the deck itself. He tried to catch it, it scooted away, right toward PJ! Who tried to get it, and it went back toward Cookie. OMG It was horrible. I thought for sure one of them was going to catch it and hurt the little guy. Not to mention getting rabies or some such shit. I managed to pick both the cats up and put them in the house and the little squirrel jumped the fence and into the tree.

All wound up and being fierce.

PJ is constantly going over the fence and into the backyard. It’s not really a backyard, it’s more like a parking lot. Anyhow he’s not supposed to be over there but he does it anyway. For someone on his last legs, he’s extremely fiesty. He does have a bad day here and there but most of the time, this is his M.O.

Here are some pics of the various weather on the deck

That plastic is there because it hails a lot here. Including yesterday. I had been meaning to make a more permanent structure for hail protection but hadn’t gotten around to it. Yesterday out of nowhere it started pouring down hail. I bought this plastic awhile ago and had DM drag it out for me then we went out in the hard rain and hail and covered everything. We were only out there like two minutes but were completely soaked all the way thru our clothes. It was insane. Today I went out and covered them at the first sign of thunder. Sheesh.

The following are various seedlings and plantings. You’re not really supposed to plant tomatoes till this weekend but I did it the first week in May. Luckily we didn’t have any snow and they’re doing pretty well now. I’ll keep taking pics as the summer goes on. I’m trying to do everything by seeds this year, so we’ll see. It’s a pretty short growing season here, so…

Ok so that’s it for now! I hope you enjoyed the pictures of my Oh So Exciting Life!

Breakfast at Paradise Cove, Malibu

I should never have to ask for a coffee refill. If my cup is half-empty or more, someone — and maybe not even the table’s server — should fill it or ask if it needs filling. If I have to ask for my empty cup to be filled, something has gone wrong.

Edit by Adrienne: Yea, but with a view like this from the diningroom, they can do whatever they want!

Last month we went out to Malibu to Paradise Cove Cafe for their super awesome macadamia nut pancakes.

DM had a waffle which he was unimpressed by.

The pancakes and eggs were delish, tho!

Chicago! Day Two

Chicago Day 2
Got up and went to The Bongo Room for breakfast. I’ve been before and couldn’t wait for these lemon raspberry pancakes.

OMG they are good. I didn’t want to eat something sooooo junky, tho, so I made Mike order them and I got a healthy veggie breakfast buritto.

Hee hee. We swapped half way thru breakfast so I could experience the goodness and he could not die of a sugar overload.

After breakfast we wandered around Wicker Park which is a fun little neighborhood full of cute shops, lots of bars, and yummy restaurants. We even went to an open house cuz we’re thinking about moving there next year, maybe. The townhouse we saw was really great but it was also $610,000. Sheeesh. Anyhow after that we went to Easy Bar and had a drink.

Then we went back downtown to Navy Pier and took a boat ride out in the lake.

Later that evening we went to Little Italy. I hadn’t been there or read much about it but I thought it would be like Little Italy in other big cities with lots of restaurants, bakeries, and bars. It wasn’t. There were only a few restaurants! We randomly chose The Rosebud cuz it was crowded and looked good. We needed reservations to sit in the diningroom but the bar was empty and had tables so we sat in there. It was fun cuz we got to see everyone coming and going. Anyhow we later found out that it’s a pretty old place. The owner owns lots of other places now but this was the original. There were lots of big parties. We saw some homecoming dance goers, some people who looked like they were there for a wedding rehearsal dinner, lots of family get togethers, a couple of dates. The food was REALLLLLY good. Tasted like being in Italy! I had a ricotta dumpling thing. I’m not sure if the dumplings were made of ricotta or the normal gnocchi deal but there was lots of ricotta in the sauce and it was baked and creamy and cheesy and sooooooooooooo good.

I didn’t finish it so I brought it back to the hotel (we had a little fridge in our room) and had it as a snack for two more days, hee hee. DM had spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs were the size of my head.

Crazy! We also had canolli for dessert but I scarfed it before I remembered to take a picture of it. The last day we were there we discovered that another of the owner’s restaurants was in the lobby of our hotel! So we went down there for more canolli and coffee as a little mid afternoon snack.

I don’t remember what we did after dinner but it probably involved being rolled back to the hotel and into the bed.
