Last year, we tied for third with then-Business Journal writer John Hazlehurst and decided that he must be destroyed. He has since moved to the Indy, which means that while he still pens a regular column, we have not seen any Hazlehurst-specific “blog.” Consider yourself destroyed, Mr. Hazlehurst.
The first-place winner was a coupon thing, so whatever with that. Who can compete with bargains? The second-place winner is a member of Big Media, and who can trust Big Media?
It’s time for Oinkety to be the Springs’ No. 2 blog.
You have to vote for at least 15 things for your ballot to count. Here’s a sampling of what we voted for:
Adrienne and I agreed on a few of the categories. But we disagreed on a bunch, too:
Best Neighborhood Restaurant – West: Adrienne enjoys La Baguette, but I like Cucuru.
Best Neighborhood Restaurant – Central: Adrienne went with Shuga’s, while I went with Detz.
Best Restaurant for Dining Alone: Adrienne would rather go to Shuga’s alone, and I prefer Poor Richard’s.
In fact, for just about every category, Adrienne picked Shuga’s. Best Happy Hour; Best Patio; Best Place for a Wedding Reception; Best Appetizers; Best Soup; Best Bartender (Kevin); Best Place for a Fancy-Pants Cocktail. Someone has a Shuga’s addiction.
We sometimes write about cats. That alone is worth your vote.
It almost didn’t happen. Nearly everyone slated to be in the Pink Kitty “float” had to cancel. One was called in to work unexpectedly, another didn’t know what day the parade was, someone else vanished from the face of the Earth and could not be found.
So we started the day thinking it might just be Adrienne on the float with me driving. Lame. But we ended up with five girls, including my mom, who reluctantly agreed to pilot the car. And former coworker Katie, who joined us at the last minute. Glad everything worked out.
What started out as a disaster ended up being awesome. Mom agreed to pilot; Katie showed up at the last minute to ride shotgun; Molly fought off sickness. Excellent save! That's Neesha and Liz in back, too.
St. Patrick's Day parade float Capt. Linda.
Getting ready to go!
Setting out to be in the 28th Annual Colorado Springs St. Patrick's Day Parade, 2011
I’ve used Living Social coupons in the past and even recommended that you use them. But today I have changed my mind.
I get them for several cities, including Oklahoma City. This morning I got one for a Flirty Girl Photography there. Whenever I hear about female photographers in other cities, I look them up. Pink Kitty Studios is always looking for freelance photographers to help us out in other places.
So I looked this girl up and what did I see? Several of MY images on her site. Not only on her site, which is really just a blog, but also on another site that featured her photography (the Oklahoma City version of The Knot — I’ve emailed them, too).
Anyhow I attempted to call Living Social, and the number was disconnected. That is not a good sign. What if you had trouble with a coupon you bought (anyone who buys the one for Flirty Girl Photography will have a problem with it!).
Anyhow, I cannot recommend Living Social anymore. Between them obviously not vetting their merchants and having no phone number to call, they are starting to seem like a big old scam.
The new apartment is coming along pretty well. We like living downtown because it’s walking distance to all the restaurants, bars, etc. that we like to go to. Also there’s a shuttle for when we’re freeeeezing. Last weekend we were drinking and playing pool at home (yea, we have a pool table, whole other story) when at about midnight we decided we wanted to head downtown to see what was going on. We met some crazy people on the shuttle, went to a bar with them, ran into some other friends of ours, brought them back home and didn’t go to bed till 4:00. Yes, I’m 25. Anyway that’s the kind of thing we do now which aside from our old neighborhood being full of gross people, is why we wanted to move down here in the first place. Also my work is soooo slow now, I guess because of the economy (altho February has always been our slowest month). I only have 2 or 3 shoots a month scheduled for awhile now. So I can go out and get crazy and have drunk people over who mess up my house cuz I have plenty of free time to sleep and clean.
Here are some pics:
Kitchen befores and afters. The checkerboard floor is “fake”. It’s sheet goods that I put down just for shoots, right on top of the hideous carpet (DM’s brilliant solution!). We haven’t found a permanent yet inexpensive solution to the hideous carpet yet.
The bathroom was gross. I had it painted pink, then cleaned it and DM scraped off all whatever that crap on the sink was, I scraped the ridiculous white caulk off the tile grout (which is grey) and redid it with clear caulk (it should have been regrouted but hey, if the landlord wants caulk, I’ll do caulk). Then DM pulled up the gross green shag carpet (which you can only barely see there) and we painted the floor red. There was a small passthru/hallway type thing between the kitchen, pool room, and bathroom and I thought, hey, that would be a good dressingroom for the girls. So a curtain, a mirror, and some hooks later and there it is. I’m still working on the lighting for the pics of the girls- it’s kinda hard with the red floor and pink walls.
I don’t have many before/afters of the rest of the house (still haven’t found a cord for my external hard drive, what an endless and frustrating thing that has been). But when I do I’ll post more. Meanwhile, here are some shots I did in the pool room- which is also a “library”.
